As of Thursday, August 20, 2009; here are the top 5 candidates to win Miss Universe 2009 according to the world-wide votes at the main Miss Universe site (images from Miss Universe L.P., LLLP) :

Miss Indonesia - Zivanna Letisha Siregar
Miss Ecuador - Sandra Vinces
Miss Guatemala - Lourdes Figueroa

In 41st place Miss USA - Kristen Dalton
Since 1980, the South American & Latin countries have dominated the two major international beauty pageants, Miss Universe and Miss World (with few exceptions). This year, in the pre-event vote count at the Miss Universe site, 6 South American countries (out of possible 10) are in the top 15 (semi-final stage). And 9 Latin American countries are in the 15.
A Latin girl will win this beauty pageant, again. Unless there is an upset, which does happen once in a while but it is not likely.
