Editor's Pick Best New Restaurant: La Mar Cebichería Peruana
Since the day it docked on Pier 1 1/2 like a Peruvian-flagged QE2, La Mar has been pretty much booked solid. This success story—the fifth of its kind in Lima-based celebrity chef Gaston’s empire—bucks many a trend: San Franciscans love their cozy neighborhood spots, but La Mar is located in an echoing historic building and has 180 seats. We value local chefs, but La Mar is unabashedly an import. We worship Italian, but La Mar offers not a strand of pasta. Instead, staples of Peruvian cuisine (potatoes, raw fish, aji amarillo and Pisco) star in almost every dish or drink, traditional or nouvelle. The restaurant’s bar has been packing Fi-Di regulars in for the spot-on Pisco punch accompanied by plantain, sweet potato and potato chips dipped into a trio of delicious creamy salsas. In its dining room, you’ll see the signature dish of tender octopus atop mashed potato being enjoyed at almost every table, but don’t bypass the rustic prawn stew topped with a poached egg. There’s no surprise, though, about the best dishes of all: The five variations on ceviche, marinated in zippy leche de tigre (lime juice and peppers), steal the show.
